Como ler e escrever o arquivo excel

Quero ler e escrever um ficheiro Excel a partir de Java com 3 colunas e N linhas, imprimindo uma string em cada célula. Alguém pode me dar um simples trecho de código para isso? Preciso usar alguma biblioteca externa ou o Java tem suporte embutido para isso?

Eu quero fazer o seguinte:

for(i=0; i <rows; i++)
     //read [i,col1] ,[i,col2], [i,col3]

for(i=0; i<rows; i++)
    //write [i,col1], [i,col2], [i,col3]

Tente o Apache POI HSSF. Aqui's um exemplo de como ler um arquivo excel:

try {
    POIFSFileSystem fs = new POIFSFileSystem(new FileInputStream(file));
    HSSFWorkbook wb = new HSSFWorkbook(fs);
    HSSFSheet sheet = wb.getSheetAt(0);
    HSSFRow row;

    // This trick ensures that we get the data properly even if it doesn't start from first few rows

Apache POI pode fazer isto por si. Especificamente o módulo HSSF. O guia rápido é muito útil. Aqui's como fazer o que você quer - especificamente criar uma folha e escrevê-la.
